Children Smiled EP – 2007
In 2007 Jon Landry and I met a country gospel singer named Guy Parsons at Acadia Hall in Lower Sackville, NS. We were smitten by Guy and his nostalgic stories of touring Atlantic Canada with his band Country Cousins. Guy was a real entertainer. He liked to yodel and sing sad songs but he was a charismatic and charming guy. I asked him if he had any studio recordings in his career and he said I had “1 record made, but I don’t know where I put it”.
Charlie Coolen engineered this EP in the Folds of Policy rehearsal space on Quinpool Road in Halifax in the winter of 2007. It’s pretty low-fi, and it’s what they call a SPLIT EP, so you’ll hear three songs from me, and three songs from Guy. I miss SPLIT records. My first version of Navina is recorded here as “Riding Along”, along with my first version of Children Smiled, and an Adam Carroll-inspired song called Beginning of Tears. Jon Landry, Craig Harris and Charlie Coolen all contributed a bit of backing music and Alex Matheson sings some really nice parts on Angel Band.
Enjoy, and God bless the one and only Guy Parsons.
